An exciting panel discussion was arranged for the benefit of faculty, staff, students, and our community on March 3, 2010. The subject was the "State of the Master Plan for Higher Education in California." The panel included activist and author Tom Hayden, who served for 18 years as a California state legislator on the committees dealing with higher education, Superintendent President Eloy Oakley, and our colleague, Craig Hendricks of the Department of History and Political Science. Kevin Ryan, President of the Academic Senate, moderated the discussion. The panel explored three questions. First, what was the Master Plan for Higher Education, when did it begin, what did it intend for the students and citizens of California, what did it put in place. Second, how did it change over the period of its existence? What were its achievements and limitations? Third, what is the state of the master plan today and why is it in the condition it is in?
