Description
HORNETS OVERCOME THEMSELVES TO ADVANCE TO THE STATE FINALS! The #1 Hornets almost let the whole season slip away on Sunday losing to #4 Palomar College in the first game of the day 8-0, and then they came out flat in the second game against the Comets digging themselves into a 6-0 hole.
Fullerton had only 1 hit through the first five innings against a pitcher with only 12 innings on the mound under his belt. Then something funny happened. The Hornets began to play their brand of baseball shaking off the baseball demons that handed them 6 errors.
FC's bats finally woke up for Mother's Day, and they went on a tear beginning in the 6th inning when 1B Garrett Donohoe singled to center scoring DH Troy Mulcahey.
In the 7th, FC made it a game again on a 3B Erik Lewis single scoring Derreck Garcia. Mulcahey then doubled to right field scoring CF Dakota Wix. SS Jose Rojas made it 6-4 game when he singled to right field scoring Lewis.
In the 8th inning, Fullerton broke the game open scoring 3 runs, which was lead off by RF Ryan Joyce. Joyce smoked a triple to right field and then ended up scoring on a Comet throwing error to third base. Lewis then singled scoring 2B Derreck Garcia and then Mulcahey hit a shot through the left side allowing Wix to score giving the Hornets a 7-6 lead.
Coach Nick Fuscardo then sent in RP Jacob Miller (4-0, 5 saves) to shut down Palomar in the 9th, and he did just that advancing the Fullerton College Baseball squad to the CCCAA State Finals for the first time in school history.
FC Starting pitcher Jeff Curran (8-2) took the no decision going 4-2 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run. RP Sean Michel (6-0, 4 saves) got the win throwing 3.1 innings with 1 hit against and no earned runs. Miller went an inning and had no hits against with one strikeout.
The Palomar College Comets end their fine season with an overall record of 29-13 and were the 2013 Pacific Coast Conference Champions.
Up Next: Fullerton College (30-13 overall) heads up to Fresno City College for the State Finals that will feature four teams (two from the south and two from the north) May 17-19. Interestingly enough, both teams from the south are not only from the Orange Empire Conference (OEC), but they are also from the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD). This is the ONLY time that two baseball teams from the same DISTRICT have advanced to the state tournament!
The #1S Hornets will open up with #2N Feather River College (29-12 overall) this Friday, May 17th at 6:00 pm. http://www.fchornets.com http://twitter.com/FullCollSports
