Academic Excellence: Club Altazor

Professor Claudio Durán decided to create a transfer club at Merritt College with the intention of supporting minority students trying to navigate the transition to a four year college or university. Professor Durán chose to translate the word 'Altazor' to mean - 'illuminate the path of knowledge' or 'a light of knowledge'. In 2013 a total of 18 students from club Altazor were accepted to 4 year colleges, capturing the attention of local news. The club is open to students of Merritt College. It is mainly student operated and functions as a multi-disciplinary peer support group, under the guidance of Professor Durán and other staff advisors.
